hi i have just bought a usb ide/sata harddrive adapter but the drive wont show up. why could this be?

the only drivers that are installed are for the adapter and not the hard drive. the hard drive does work as i have tested it in the same laptop in the internal ide conector. what else could this be? thanks
yes my usb port is working fine. also i have just tried my sata hard drive out of my desktop pc and it works using the poer suply from the desktop and just plugging the sata cable in to the adapter. when i plug the ide 2.5 drive in it just spins and thats it

also i have tried disk managment and the drive doesnt show up on there either so i cant assign it a letter

Right click my computer, manage, disk management, you will see it there right click and assign it a drive letter
