Serial Pci
pci ethernet controller and serial controller?

I am trying to install an ethernet card in a pci slot for a 98 OS. The hardware it shows that needs drivers is 2 pci ethernet controllers and 1 pci serial controller. I have tried to install drivers downloaded and from an ethernet driver CD. It will not load it. Is pci ethernet controller or pci serial controller the same? What am I doing wrong? Thanks

Essentially, an ethernet controller is different from a serial controller in the type of interface connection type they each have. Generally an ethernet controller uses either and RJ11 or and RJ45 connection. RJ11 connectors are receivers for telephone cords, RJ45 connectors are CAT5 and CAT6 cable connections. Serial connectors have all together different connectors usually DB9 or DB25 connectors, here is a link to a website that shows you the different types of PCI cards with there connectors: http://www.specialix.biz/pci-serial-port-cards/index.html .

The biggest problem you are going to have with installing a controller card into a windows 98 machine is finding drivers for that operating system. You can try the website for the card’s manufacturer to see if they have a compatible driver for windows 98, if not, try contacting them, perhaps they can point you in the direction of someone who might have a 3rd party driver for it. Most new cards are going to come with drivers for Windows 2000 or new operating systems, systems that use the PNP connectivity.

Here is a link to Intel’s website containing numerous PCI and PCI-E controller cards made by them with documents and software links for each: http://www.intel.com/design/network/products/ethernet/linecard_ec.htm .
