Differences between external and internal frame backpacks?
Yes, I understand the difference is whether the frame is on the outside or not, but what difference does this make?
Is one more comfortable, or is one more suited for a certain type of activity? Could anyone briefly give me the pros and cons of them, or suggest why I might choose one over the other.
I’ve used an external frame before and loved it. I’m looking to buy soon but I’m not sure if the internal frame has any drawbacks or advantages. Thanks.
I prefer internal frame packs because they are more streamlined, less likely to be snagged by a branch etc. Also, they tend to be lighter than external frames and in my opinion can hold more in less room. I believe a 3,000 cubic in internal is smaller in size than a 3,000 cubic in external frame, obviously they can hold the same amount but the overall pack size is different. I also prefer to store my gear inside my pack, where as with external frames you can store a sleep pad or your sleeping bag on the outside. I think it is mainly a matter of preference but also practicality- you don’t want to be hiking through mountain laurel or Rhododendron with an external frame pack, you wont have fun.
I have a friend who is a guide out west and swears by his External frame because it offers more protection for your neck if you are attacked by a mtn. lion. Apparently it saved his friend’s life, how true this account is I cant personally verify but if he says it happened I believe.
