do i have to replace the heatsink and fan when I upgrade the CPU? I am upgrading to AMD64 or 64 X2.?
I have a Compaq presario sr1603wm and an asus Amberine M mobo. HP states that I can upgrade to an single or dual core Athlon 64. Does that make sense?
Yes, they use the same socket type.
Your stock fan should be fine, they wont run too hot.
Now if you were getting a quad core then yes, a new fan would be needed.
You’d still be safer getting a better heatsink and fan, but the old one will be fine.
(Make sure you get some heat resistant putty to put in between the CPU and Heatsink because it wont come with any)
